What is B Corp™?
A practical guide for SMEs
If you have been hearing more about B Corp™ recently, you are not imagining it. The number of certified B Corps around the world is growing steadily, and for good reason.
B Corp certification has become one of the most credible and recognised ways for a business to demonstrate that it is genuinely committed to doing better - for its people, its community, and the planet.
But what is B Corp, exactly? What does certification involve? And is it the right step for your business? This guide answers those questions clearly and honestly, based on years of experience helping SMEs through the process.
What does B Corp actually mean?
A certified B Corp is a business that has been independently verified to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency.
B Corp stands for Benefit Corporation.
The founding principles are to build a business that exists to benefit not just its shareholders, but all of its stakeholders: its employees, its customers, its community, and the environment. B Corp certification is the way a business proves it is living up to that ambition.
It is worth being clear about what B Corp is not. It is not a marketing label or a badge that can be bought. It is not a set of pledges or intentions. It is a rigorous, independently verified certification, and maintaining it requires ongoing commitment and continuous improvement.
There are now over 10,000 certified B Corps globally, spanning almost every industry and size. In the UK, the movement is growing rapidly, with businesses across manufacturing, professional services, food and drink, retail, and many other sectors choosing certification as a statement of how they intend to do business.
What is B Corp certification?
B Corp certification is the formal process by which a business demonstrates that it meets the standards set by B Lab™ - the global non-profit organisation that oversees the B Corp movement.
To become a certified B Corp, a business must embed the B Corp wording into their legal framework, complete a detailed assessment of its practices and performance across seven core impact areas, meet the required standards in each, and go through an independent third party verification process.
Certification is not a one-time achievement. It must be renewed on a five-year cycle, and the standards are designed to rise over time - meaning that certified B Corps are expected to keep improving, not simply maintain the status quo.
This is one of the things that makes B Corp certification genuinely meaningful: it is built around continuous progress, and ensuring purpose is truly embedded in your business.
Since early 2026, all new and recertifying B Corps have been assessed under the V2 standards. This is a significant update to the framework that raises expectations and strengthens the verification process. If you are exploring B Corp certification now, it is V2 that applies to you.
The new B Corp standards - what has changed with V2?
The introduction of V2 represents the most significant update to the B Corp framework to date. Rather than a single numerical score, the new standards require businesses to demonstrate that they are actively meeting requirements across seven defined impact areas. Every area matters, there are no opt-outs and no averaging across topics.
The seven core impact areas under V2 are:
-
Embedding purpose into the legal structure and governance of the business, and demonstrating accountability to all stakeholders.
-
Ensuring that employees are treated fairly, paid equitably, and work in conditions that support their wellbeing and development.
-
Building an organisation that is genuinely inclusive, addresses systemic inequalities, and creates opportunity for people from all backgrounds.
-
Identifying and addressing human rights risks across the business and its supply chain, in line with internationally recognised standards.
-
Taking meaningful, measurable steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and address the business’s contribution to climate change.
-
Managing the broader environmental impact of the business - including waste, water, biodiversity, and the circular use of materials and resources.
-
Engaging responsibly in public affairs and contributing to collective efforts to create systemic change beyond the individual business.
Requirements are phased in across a five-year certification cycle - with mandatory sub-requirements introduced at Year 0, Year 3, and Year 5 - to allow businesses to build and improve over time rather than meet every standard on day one.
Verification is carried out by independent auditors, strengthening the credibility of the process and reducing the risk of greenwashing. The standards are also designed to align with emerging regulations, including the EU’s ECGT Directive.
Is B Corp right for your business?
B Corp certification is not right for every business at every stage, and it is important to be honest about that.
It requires a genuine commitment of time, resource, and organisational effort. It asks you to look carefully and honestly at how your business operates across a wide range of areas, and it holds you to a rising standard over time.
For the right business, however, it is one of the most powerful steps you can take. B Corp certification attracts and retains purpose-driven talent. It builds trust with customers, partners, and supply chains. It provides a rigorous framework for continuous improvement. And it connects you to a growing global community of businesses that share your values.
B Corp tends to be a strong fit for businesses that:
Already operate with a genuine commitment to doing business responsibly, and want that commitment to be independently verified.
Are open to change, even if to date the business has operated with a profit first mindset.
Are looking for a framework that brings structure and accountability to their sustainability and impact goals.
Want to differentiate themselves credibly in a market where claims around sustainability are increasingly scrutinised.
Are prepared to commit to continuous improvement, not just a one-off certification exercise.
If you are not sure whether B Corp is right for your business, a discovery call with Laura is the best place to start. There is no pressure and no obligation, simply an honest conversation about where you are and what might be possible.

How to become a B Corp certified business
Becoming a certified B Corp is a multi-stage process.
How working with a B Corp consultant can help
The single most important thing you can do to make the process smoother, faster, and less stressful is to work with an experienced B Corp consultant from the outset.
Having someone who knows the framework in depth, understands what verifiers are looking for, and can guide your business through each stage makes a significant difference to both the experience and the outcome.
Our B Corp Complete programme gives SMEs exactly that: expert, end-to-end support through every stage of the certification process.
What does it cost to become a B Corp?
The cost of B Corp certification has two distinct elements: the cost of support to go through the process, and the fees charged by B Lab™ for certification and ongoing membership.
B Lab’s certification and annual membership fees are set by B Lab and vary based on your business’s annual revenue. They are transparent and publicly available on the B Lab website. The annual fees are proportionate and reflect the size and turnover of the business. See the B Corp pricing page.
The cost of working with a B Corp consultant to guide you through the process depends on the level and duration of support required, and the person or company you choose to work with. At Planet & Purpose, we are always transparent about our fees from the outset. A discovery call is the best way to understand what investment is likely to be involved for your business specifically.
It is worth thinking about the cost of B Corp certification not just as an expenditure, but as an investment. The businesses that approach it this way, and commit to the process properly, consistently find that the returns, in terms of talent, trust, and business development, are well worth it.
What is B Lab™?
B Lab is the global non-profit organisation that created and oversees B Corp certification.
B Lab now operates through a network of regional offices around the world — including B Lab UK, which is responsible for certifying and supporting B Corps in the United Kingdom.
B Lab develops and maintains the standards that B Corps must meet, and works to build the B Corp movement globally.
It also advocates for policy change and systemic reform, working to create an economic system in which all businesses are accountable for their impact on people and planet.
When you pursue B Corp certification, it is B Lab that evaluates your business and awards your certification. The verification process is conducted by one of two B Lab partners. Maintaining a strong relationship with B Lab, and understanding how it operates and what it looks for, is an important part of a successful certification journey. It is also one of the areas where working with an experienced consultant makes a real difference.

ESG stands for Environmental, Social, and Governance - a broad framework used to assess a business’s impact and responsibility, particularly in the context of investment and reporting. B Corp certification and ESG are related but distinct.
B Corp is a specific, independently verified certification with defined standards and a rigorous assessment process. ESG is a broader set of criteria that can be applied and reported in many different ways. The V2 B Corp standards are designed to align with emerging ESG regulations, meaning that pursuing B Corp certification can also help your business meet growing ESG expectations from investors, customers, and regulators.

B Corp certification is distinctive in several ways. It covers the whole business, not just one aspect of its operations such as its supply chain or carbon footprint. It is independently verified by third-party auditors. It requires ongoing commitment and renewal, meaning that certification reflects current performance rather than a historical snapshot. And it is underpinned by a legal accountability requirement, meaning that certified B Corps must consider the interests of all stakeholders, rather than just shareholders, in their governance and decision-making. This combination of breadth, rigour, and accountability is what sets B Corp apart.
