The Client
Bombaby is a values-led clothing brand built on principles that are rare in the fashion sector: fair pay and conditions for the team behind every garment, recyclable and plastic-free packaging, azo-free dyes, and lately a switch to GOTS certified cotton.
Its founder, Sarah Dixon-Dale, came to business from a career in education and safeguarding, and that background shows in the way Bombaby has always treated its Jaipur-based team as people to look after and champion rather than a route to cheaper products.
When Sarah came to me, Bombaby wasn’t trying to become a sustainable business. It already was one. What it needed was a way to prove that, formally, to a global standard, and someone to guide them through the process of doing so.
The Challenge
Good instincts and good practice are not the same as good evidence. That is the gap many founders hit when they start the B Impact Assessment.
B Corp certification asks hundreds of questions across governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. For every one, it wants proof: policies, payslips, supplier audits, environmental data, documented process. Bombaby had been doing the right things in practice, but very little of it existed in the form B Lab needed to see it. The founder was running the business largely on her own, and the sheer volume of documentation required was, understandably, overwhelming.
My job was to close that gap: to translate years of genuine, lived practice into formalised procedures that will remain as the company grows, and present a body of evidence that would stand up to B Lab’s scrutiny.
My Approach
I worked alongside Bombaby from the very start of the B Impact Assessment through to final verification with B Lab. In practice, that meant:
Assessment strategy: mapping Bombaby’s existing practices against the B Impact Assessment framework to identify where evidence already existed, where it needed to be created, and where genuine gaps sat.
Evidence gathering: compiling and formatting the policies, procedures, supplier information, and environmental data needed to substantiate every claim.
Chasing and pushing: keeping momentum on a process that easily stalls when a founder is stretched thin, and stepping in on the detail work, including collating images, data and information sent from the team in Jaipur.
Verification support: managing Bombaby’s side of the process through B Lab’s review, right through to certification.
Throughout, the goal was not just to get Bombaby over the line, but to make sure the certification genuinely reflected the business that at its core is built with real care for its team in Jaipur and a real commitment to the planet.
The Outcome
Bombaby is now a certified B Corp — one of the more meaningful outcomes I’ve been part of, and not only because of the result. Reading through Bombaby’s documentation of its relationship with the Jaipur team, in particular, was genuinely moving. It's rare to see that level of care built into the fabric of a business, rather than bolted on for a certification.
Certification gave Bombaby something it hadn’t had before: a formal, external, rigorous validation of everything it had quietly been doing for years.
✦ “Find yourself a Laura. Genuinely: do not attempt this alone. Not because you can’t, but because the process deserves someone in your corner who believes in what you’re building. It makes all the difference”✦
— SARAH DIXON-DALE, BOMBABY FOUNDER
